The Science Behind Hibiscus: What Research Says About This Ancient Botanical

The part of the plant most commonly used for hibiscus tea is the calyx—the protective outer structure that surrounds the seed pod. After harvest, these vibrant red calyces are dried and used to create the deep color, tart flavor, and unique character associated with hibiscus beverages.
The 2008 Tufts University Hibiscus Tea Study
In 2008, researchers at the Jean Mayer USDA Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging at Tufts University conducted a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical study examining hibiscus tea consumption in adults with prehypertension or mild hypertension.
Participants consumed hibiscus tea daily for six weeks, and researchers observed changes in blood pressure measurements compared with a placebo group.
The study reported that participants who consumed hibiscus tea experienced a greater reduction in systolic blood pressure compared with those consuming the placebo beverage. Researchers suggested that naturally occurring compounds in hibiscus, including polyphenols and anthocyanins—the pigments responsible for hibiscus’ deep ruby-red color—may contribute to its potential effects.
While additional research continues to explore hibiscus and its relationship with human health, this study helped increase interest in hibiscus as a functional botanical ingredient.
