Hibiscus (Hibiscus Sabdariffa)

A tropical plant, Hibiscus Sabdariffa, of the mallow family, grown for its thick, red calyx and bracts, grows with white to pale yellow flowers that have a deep red spot on each petal. The plant produces bright red fruit as it matures, which takes about six months. The part of the plant that is edible are the calyxes of the Hibiscus flower which can be used to make a variety of jams, sauces, and teas.
